January in Central Florida: Prime Time for Big Bites

Many anglers overlook January, but in Central Florida it is one of the best months of the year to be on the water. While much of the country is dealing with winter conditions, our bass are entering one of their most aggressive feeding periods—the prespawn.
As water temps begin to stabilize, our bass start staging near spawning areas and feeding heavily. This makes January an outstanding month for both numbers and quality fish.
Why January is so productive
During the prespawn phase, bass are focused on one thing: feeding up before the spawn. In our local lakes, fish begin moving from deeper winter areas toward shallow flats, grass lines and hard-bottom staging areas. Even subtle depth changes if a foot or two can hold groups of fish.
Unlike in a month or later in spring, bass are not yet locked onto beds. That means they are far more willing to chase moving baits and react aggressively, which is ideal for booking a fishing trip with Fleetwood Bass.
What We’re Targeting
In January, we focus on:
-outside grass edges and isolated clumps
-ditches and drains leading to spawning flats
-shell beds and firmer bottom transitions
-protected areas that warm quickly during the day
Late morning through mid-afternoon is often the most productive window, as water temps rise and fish slide shallower.
A Great Month for Guided Trips
January is one of my favorite months to guide. The fish are predictable, the pressure is lighter than peak spring, and the chance of landing a true Florida Trophy is very real. Whether you’re looking to learn seasonal patterns, catch your personal best, or simply enjoy a productive day on the water, this is an excellent time to book a trip with Fleetwood Bass.
